One hundred inmates were believed to have been killed in gang fighting in a Dominican Republic prison. The fighting led to a fire but guards could not open the cellblock to let the inmates out.
The local El Nacional reported the fire broke out during a battle between rival gangs in the prison. The blaze spread rapidly as inmates set fire to their bedding.
These fire deaths come just a week after the Dominican Republic has been named in a US Human rights report for violations, especially in its prison system.
