Spanish Towns crime problems reached a low last week when soldiers had to be brought in to stop the violence after gunmen stormed the area and caused businesses to shut down. The murder of reputed gang leader, James Bubba Smith led to the latest outbreak of violence. Local business people lamented the inability of police to control crime and cited the extortion racket as out of control. As a solution businesspersons offered to provide police with computers to build a database of criminals that would assist them in tracking gang members. Since the beginning of the year 109 murders have been committed in ST. Catherine with 89 in Spanish Town alone. The effect on business has been devastating.
