The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) ruled Brian Laras contract with Cable and Wireless (C&W) was signed before his contract with the WICB and therefore he is eligible for selection. However, the remaining six of the rebel seven remained on the outside because their contracts with C&W were signed after their contracts with the WICB. The conflict arose after the WICB named a squad to prepare for South Africas tour and excluded Lara, Chris Gayle, Ronnie Sarwan and 4 others. WICB gave their reason for the exclusion as conflicts between the seven players individual contracts with C&W and the WICBs contract with new sponsors, Digicel. The problem reared its head in Australia, earlier this year, when certain players contracted to C&W refused to corporate in promoting the Digicel name |
