Police killed five demonstrators in Port-Au-Prince, Haitis capital. Police say they were reacting to being shot at by gunmen in the crowd. But some of the protesters disputed the account.
Haiti is preparing for elections later this year to replace its interim government, but has been wracked with violence for the last 14 months.
Previous President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was driven out in February 2004 after a revolt.
Demonstrators in the rally were demanding that Mr.Aristide be allowed to return, his allies be released from prison, and for an end to alleged persecution by his successors.
