In the face of mounting pressure from both local and international groups, Guyanas Minister of Home Affairs Ronald Gajraj has resigned. He's expected to step down from office at the end of May. In a statement broadcast on National Radio and Television, the embattled Minister said his continued service may not be in the best interest of the Government and people of Guyana.
But his announcement came as no surprise to observers. He was reinstatement last month on the heels of being cleared of any involvement in directing unlawful death squad killings. A Presidential Commission of Inquiry that was appointed last year to investigate the allegations returned the findings at the beginning of April. Gajraj was not long after reinstated but amidst a flurry of criticism from opposition parties, civil society groups, the US, Canada and the European Union. Many feared international aid to Guyana may have been threatened by his return to office.
