The recently released United Nations Development Program, Human Development Report 2004, shows many Caribbean nations with adult literacy levels from the high 80s to the 90s. .
Barbados topped the region with 99.7 rating. Trinidad & Tobago came in second with 98.5 percent. St. Kitts scored a 97.8, Cuba and Guyana rounded out the top five with 96.9 and 96.5. The study is based on individuals who can read and write, with understanding, a short simple statement related to everyday life. By Comparison the literacy index rate of India is 60 and across Africa 40-70
Barbados also topped the regions Human Development Index (HDI) scale with a 29. The HDI measures life expectancy, knowledge, and the standard of living of countries people. St. Kitts also registered the 2nd highest HDI index of 39. Guyanas despite its high literacy index could only manage a HDI of 104
