The Guyana Government is considering new models to reform the gun-licensing regime. And one proposal suggests vesting the power to grant and renew licenses in an independent panel.
A new model should be in place in the upcoming months, one it is agreed President Bharrat Jagdeo announced.
About a month ago the government said it would look at reforming the gun licensing laws after a recent probe found a number of discrepancies in the issuance of licenses.
Under Guyana's current laws, Police Divisional Commanders are vested with the power to approve and issue gun licenses. But the Commissioner of Police and the Minister of Home Affairs, Ronald Gajraj were found to have been overriding this authority by using a Police Standing Order that dates back to the '60s.
Minister Gajraj steps down from office at the end of the month following a scandal that linked him to a death squad group.
