Tourism industry officials and business owners in the US Virgin Islands are expressing relief that new U.S passport regulations, which take effect in December of this year, will not significantly impact local businesses.
According to the USVI Economic Development Authority, nearly 2 million tourists visit the territory each year and the majority of them are residents of the northeastern United States. Theyre accustomed to visiting without a passport.
However, US citizens visiting, or residing in the USVI territory will need a passport if they intend to visit other Caribbean islands, beginning December 31. Additionally, US citizens will continue to be asked for proof of citizenship at "points of entry." A birth certificate, or passport is recommended. Airlines also require a picture i.d.
