Venezuelan Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel is calling US officials "hypocritical" after Washington rejected Caracas' request for the detention of Luis Posada Carriles. Posada Carriles is a militant opponent of Cuban President Fidel Castro.
Rangel led a protest against the U.S rejection, called by supporters of President Hugo Chavez, a close ally of Castro. He said it was to "expose the hypocritical and fake US leaders."
Venezuela wants to put Posada Carriles on trial for the downing of a Cuban airliner in 1976. All 73 passengers aboard were killed including eleven Guyanese. Posada escaped a Venezuelan prison while awaiting an appeal of his trial there.
U.S officials say the request from Venezuela lacks sufficient basis from a legal point of view.
Posada Carriles is 77 years old. Hes been under arrest in the U.S. since May 17 on immigration charges, after requesting political asylum here.
