Jamaica sugar protest on EU cuts

Monday, June 20, 2005

Sugar workers in Jamaica are protesting again against the European Union's plan to cut the price it pays for imported Caribbean sugar.
The price is currently set artificially high as a means of helping the economies in the sugar cane growing countries but those subsidies go against World Trade Organisation trade rules.
Vincent Morrison, an official from the National Workers Union said a cut will result in lay-offs and redundancies.
The union official argued that the Caribbean can produce sugar at a price that is competitive on the world market, but said when Hurricane Ivan hit Jamaica last year, it had a devastating effect on the industry.
He pointed out that though Jamaica will soon be equalling, or doing better than other major sugar producing countries like Brazil, Australia and Thailand, these countries have a distinct advantage over the Caribbean. Many of their sugar producing factories are not unionised.
The European Union has announced that it will be cutting sugar prices paid to the Caribbean next year. It promised further financial aid to compensate for that.

jamaica stay strong
yes that's right, as long as the import vs export-problem is not being solved, nobody should cut back on prices of the sugar cane. This can only put the jamaican farmers down and decrease their export to Europe... Life and Debt!!!!

global protectionist
the US and European union community have been protectin their farmers for so long by guaranteed price while suppressing the price that Jamaica's sugar can command at the world market.France is the largest sugar producer consider that they are not located in a tropical region.the rich countries pay their farmers whether they sell or not while Jamaica government can not afford that luxury.Africa and the Caribbean community must come together to find solutions to this caused or else price will be continue to be cut until it makes know sense.

We don't know how strong we are as a nation of people and we are divided by man made boards its time we stop looking at class of people and start looking as one people. We need more opertunity for all the people and the corrent situation is not creating that. people are tierd and are coming to the realization that these so call leaders are not for the people, but there selfs and friends who have them in there pockets.

neva a break fi di poor...
the proposed cut in pricing can't be good for the economic situation in Ja. enough people are looking for decent work as it is, and now more face the threat of unemploy.
if the money slows into Ja., the already suffering economy would get worse. local farmers already face the disadvantage being out produced due to the presence of mechanization. even if jamaica is comparable to its fellow cane producing nations, the lack of comparable payment will diminish its ability to sustain that position.
plus, the wait for assistance to subsidize the lost revenue from outside presence rings up the old adage "promise is a comfort to a fool". even if the aid comes, it usually comes with a hefty cost to the recipient.
