One of the men accused of being a member of an alleged death squad in Guyana will stand trial for the murder of a cattle farmer following a preliminary inquiry. Ex-policeman, 37-year-old Sean Hinds, will appear before the high court over the murder of Shafeek Bacchus. His brother George, became the main source of allegations involving a government sponsored death squad that worked outside the law in Guyana. A second man charged with involvement in the murder of Shafeek, undertaker Ashton King, was freed a week ago when the magistrate ruled there was insufficient evidence to commit him to stand trial for murder. Ironically, George Bacchus, who was also due to stand trial as a key witness in an upcoming inquiry into the death squad allegations was shot and killed on June 24th, before appearing in court. Now what many may find mind boggling in this story, is a third man who was also being accused, died mysteriously in a hospital several days after he collapsed in a police stationagain-before supplying any evidence to court officials. Meanwhile, a commission has been set up to investigate all allegations concerning the death squad. |
