The elections commission in Haiti has extended the deadline for voters to register for the first elections since the ousting of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide last year.
The deadline was due to expire Tuesday, but so far only about a third of the Haitian electorate of 4.5 million have signed up.
The United Nations envoy to Haiti, Gabriel Valdez, said September 15 is now the new cut-off date for registration.
Local government elections elections are scheduled for October 9 and presidential elections on November 13.
But many journalists on the island believe it's likely the local elections will be postponed.
Meanwhile, only a moderate faction from the Mr. Aristide's Lavalas Party has registered to participate in the elections.
