Cuban scores 800m medal

Friday, August 12, 2005

Cuba's Zulia Calatayud stormed to victory in the women's 800m final at the world athletics championships in a time of one minute 58.82 seconds.
It was the fifth medal of the Helsinki championships for the Caribbean and the second for Cuba. The other three were won by Jamaica.
Calatayud went to the front on the final bend and surged clear in the home straight with Morocco's Hasna Benhassi scrapping for second.
Favourite Tatyana Andrianova of Russia finished third.
Reflecting on her achievement, a delighted Calatayud said: "For me it was important to win a medal and I did it.
"I grabbed the initiative and took off, moved into first place and kept it until the end.
