In a third and final round Suriname's incumbent president Ronald Venetiaan, 69, was re-elected for a second consecutive five-year term as head of state.
A special session of the Peoples Assembly comprising members of parliament, districts and provincial councils, was necessary after the National Assembly in two sessions last month failed to choose the new president.
Both sessions in the 51-member parliament ended in a deadlock since none of the candidates secured the mandatory two-thirds majority to win the elections.
However, in the People's Assembly, with a convincing 560 against 315 votes, Venetiaan secured the win over his opponent Rabin Parmessar, candidate for the National Democratic Party of former military strongman Desi Bouterse.
