Guyana's Coast Guard Unit is lacking the capacity to deal with the interception of narco-trafficking by sea.
Colonel Enoch Gasking of the Guyana Defence Force says international trends have shown that drug dealers prefer to transport narcotics by sea, but the local Coast Guard unit does not have the capacity to tackle this problem on its own.
He said the Coast Guard usually depended on intelligence from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit and the police force in its fight against drug trafficking.
Government promised in the recent launch of a $650M drug strategy master plan, to increase the enforcement presence at the nine ports of entry into the country.
Narco-trafficking has become a major plague to the country and several Guyanese have been held in the US with large quantities of cocaine.
