Guyana's Cheddi 'Joey' Jagan, Leader of the Unity Party (UP) and son of the late President Cheddi Jagan was injured in a hit and run accident on a busy street in the capital city, georgetown.
Police have held one of their own ranks believed to have struck down the politician before driving away. Police have also impounded the car that was involved in the incident.
Last Thursday in busy Robb Street, Police and eyewitness reports suggest that Jagan was standing behind a parked vehicle when a private car, PEE 3667, driven by the policeman in custody, struck him down. He was taken to the city's public hospital where he underwrent emergency surgery before being admitted. He suffered a broken right leg.
Police officials have ruled out the possibility of an assassination attempt on the life of Jagan but said that investigations are continuing.
