St Lucia's tourism industry crimes against visitors are the incidents that usually make the headlines. However, an attack on a local by a British visitor has put the spotlight on verbal and physical abuse of locals in the tourist industry, that usually goes unnoticed, and unreported.
Anthony Sonson, who works at a local hotel, says he was beaten up and spat upon by a British visitor, after he had reprimanded the visitor's young son for misbehaving on the hotel premises.
Sonson believes the incident was an act of disrespect to the entire nation.
The incident last week sparked some degree of national outrage not only because of what transpired at the hotel, but because of the penalty imposed on the British visitor. The British national was fined 375 E.C dollars, half of which goes to his victim in compensation.
