Jamaica has sought to assure Trinidad and Tobago that its participation in Venezuela's PetroCaribe oil initiative would not weaken its commitment to energy projects with its Caribbean Community (Caricom) partner.
Prime Minister P J Patterson says the Venezuelan initiative is complementary, rather than in opposition, to the energy facility that the Trinidadians have in place primarily for countries of the Eastern Caribbean.
Trinidadian prime minister, Patrick Manning, declined in June to sign the PetroCaribe agreement under which Venezuela, the world's fifth largest supplier of oil, will offer preferential purchase terms to Caribbean countries.
