Following a recent meeting of the Heads of Government in the Caribbean Community, CARICOM Chairman and Grenada Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell, announced, CARICOM leaders have until August 16th to decide whether Haiti can return to the organization. Fortunately for Haiti, the United Nations has decided to help the region revitalize its economy and restore democracy. Earlier this week, Juan Gabriel Valdes-Chiles ambassador to Argentina, met with Interim Prime Minister Gerard Latortue, to discuss the billion-dollar grant Haiti received recently from other countries and financial institutions. Encouraged by the support shown to the region, Valdes emphasized the UNs mission which included the process of launching economic activity, reconstructing institutions, and generating political democracy," as well as providing security. Also included-a peacekeeping force expected to expand to 6700 troops and more than 1600 international police. The UN mission will work with Haiti's interim government for six months-to train police and help prepare the country for elections next year.
