Foreign minister in St Kitts/Nevis, Timothy Harris, wants a more enlightened immigration approach to inter-regional travel by Caribbean nationals.
St Kitts is in the process of giving parliamentary approval to the Caribbean Community Bill 2005. The bill will help put the country on track to meet the requirements for the Caricom Single Market and Economy, that's CSME, by the end of the year.
The CSME will help make the goal of free movement of peoples across the region a reality. Certain categories including university graduates, media professionals and entertainers are already catered for.
But recent immigration problems involving Guyanese nationals and immigration authorities in Barbados continue to highlight the difficulties that the process can face as sovereign nations try to secure their borders.
Minister Harris says the push towards the CSME should lead to a re-thinking of how Caribbean nationals are treated in neighbouring islands.
He believes the immigration policies must be a lot more facilitating.
