Guyana's president says postponement of general elections not an option

Monday, September 19, 2005

Guyana's President Bharrat Jagdeo has put to rest all speculation about postponed general elections in the country. President Jagdeo told reporters he is optimistic the polls will be held by the constitutional deadline of August 2006. That's despite opposition parties' criticisms of the pace at which preparatory works are progressing.
Mr Jagdeo said failure to meet the August 2006 deadline was not an option and urged the Guyana Elections Commission must to be ready.
Opposition voices, led by the main opposition party, the People's National Congress/Reform have been vocal about the system to be used for the Elections in 2006. The PNC/R has already picketed the Elections Commision's office.

Guyana
I think the government should really take a look at themselves and think about what steps should be taken to bring Guyana back to life. We do have a beautiful nation and we should all try to do our best to keep it so.
