Deportee discovered teaching in Antigua sparks anger

Monday, October 10, 2005

Education officials in Antigua and Barbuda, are facing some embarrasment that a man deported from New Jersey in August was found teaching economics at a Government school. The man was deported on August 10 after spending 14 years of a 17 year sentence for a cocaine conspiracy charge.
One education official said a great deal of blaming and name calling is now taking place.
Immigration officials confirmed the man was indeed deported to Antigua in early August.
News of the man's hiring by the Education Ministry has sparked off a large debate, with many expressing alarm and shock as they questioned whether or not thorough checks were done. Some are however sympathetic, contending that the ex-con deserves a chance to put his life back on even keel.

Education Minister Bertrand
Joseph believes in reform,
but some are calling for his
head to "roll"

Y go to Jail
Part 1.
This is a very delicate topic that needs to be addressed. The person below is right. Should someone have to suffer for the rest of their life being stereotyped and judged just because they went to jail. It leaves one to ask,"Is going to jail a chance to to reformed or is it only to place a "Scarlet Letter" on that individual for life? Being deported is not all that it is made out to be. People get deported for many reasons, this being one. In this case this individual did wrong and he payed the price.

Y go to Jail
Part 2.
He is now sent back to his country and howfully to begin a new and better life. Unlike all the other deportees sent back to their country, they get involved with the wrong crowd and never try to do anything positive in their community and now the one "deportee" that has tried to turn the table is being attacked. I commend the person that gave him his second chance to a more progressive life that resorting to a life of crime and violence.
God forgives us and allows us to start a fresh and it would be nice if there were more "deportee" with a lot of self respect like this one who is trying very hard to correct his mistake. Give our returning offenders the benefit of a doubt and let this be a great start for others, such as him, to come.
