The National Hurricane Committee declared a Hurricane Warning for the Cayman Islands earlier today. While Tropical Storm Charley remains a tropical storm, the system is expected to develop into a minimal hurricane, packing winds of around 75 mph when it crosses over the Islands around midnight tonight. Grand Cayman is expected to experience tropical storm force winds this evening. Heavy wave action is also expected on Grand Cayman with waves of 9-12 feet. Flooding of low-lying areas is also expected. The storm is currently moving WNW at 18 mph. This puts it at 110 miles south southeast of Kingston, Jamaica. Residents of all areas on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac should exercise utmost caution against high winds and seas. On Grand Cayman, residents in all coastal areas should take precautions, particularly those in the south western, eastern and northern areas. The public is urged not to enter waterfront and beach areas while marine conditions deteriorate. Surfing, swimming, diving, boating, fishing and other water-sports should NOT be attempted, for individual safety and also to reduce demand on emergency staff. Rough seas may also cause road closures, particularly along the coastline. If this happens, persons should not use the roads, even if they appear to be passable. |
