A Deadly shooting spree kills 19 in two days

Monday, August 16, 2004

In Jamaica, a deadly shooting spree has claimed the lives of 19 people, pushing the island's murder toll to 691. Seven of the killings took place in Spanish Town between last Thursday and Friday, where more than 100 people have been killed this year. Residents claim the recent shootings are part of a gang feud, thats been going on since the April slaying of Patrick Gayle, a local porridge vendor who was violently gunned down during a random shooting. Three of the youngest victims include, Melleto Johnson, 19, Dwayne Miles, 24, and Granville Bryan, 26. So far, no arrests have been made, but investigations are still underway.

Ignorance
When i see things like this it enforces my choice. Some may say it's not all of Jamaica is like this, and that is true. I was raised on Wellington St, up the street from Tvly. Now as a kid i often go to sleep hearing gun shot, now that was in the late 80's early 90's.. Now with all the changes and the vast knowledge on new found violence and hate. I shouldnt have to have fear of danger to go visit family that are still in this area, or elders who use to look out for me. My friend died a couple years ago and my beloved aunt, due to hate and violence. SO u see my anger. I have not turned my back on Jamaica, how many fights I been through because of how proud I am to be Jamaican... But how sad and the tears that runs from my cheek, the thunder in my heart, from the deaths, the betrayal and the hate that washes over my people... it tears me up even writing it down.. When will my sweet, beautiful Jamaican wake up and realize if we continue.. our future may not be so bright.
