A large crowd of Antigua residents, many of whom were supporters of the opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP), took part in a national protest to voice displeasure over the way the 18-month old Baldwin Spencer-led United Progressive Party (UPP) administration is running the country.
After romping home to victory on a strong tide of support and good will, Spencer and his Government began making what some experienced local and regional politicians called "wrong turns" and mistakes. This has caused a strong swing in national support that has many, including the government's own supporters, calling for their removal.
The UPP's Chairman and manager of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority, Leon Symister, went on radio and said that Spencer and his government were "overwhelmed" with gaining power. Many others contend that the government is not "ready to govern".
Last Thursday's march encouraged supporters of other parties to join the protest action in order to send a signal to government that they're dissatisfied with over 60 main issues. Included in these is the scandalous Tenders Board affair that involved a senior government minister.
