A tough talking Trinidad Attorney General, John Jeremie, has read the riot act to corrupt public officials. He says no one will be spared from being prosecuted to the full extent of the law when found to have committed an offence.
Mr. Jeremies statement comes following several high-profile arrests in the country of public figures on corruption charges. Among them past government ministers including a former government minister of Works and Transport who is currently chairman of the ruling Peoples National Movement Party.
One of the largest corruption scandals to have hit the country relates to the construction of the Port of Spain Piarco International Airport where it is alleged that millions of dollars were stolen from the project and illegally channeled into local and foreign bank accounts of persons connected with the building of the airport.
US authorities working with Interpol brought 18 criminal charges against eight persons accused of money laundering.
They iclude Trinidads Maritime Financial Group Executive, Steve Ferguson and Northern Construction Limited Chairman Ishwar Galbaransingh. Over 2 billion TT dollars was allegedly stolen and shared among the parties.
