Fingerprint phobia

Monday, December 12, 2005

Its implementation is a year away, but already a 3.6 million U.S dollar fingerprint recognition system in Jamaica is getting flak from human rights groups. The groups say the new forensic tool for crime fighters could well infringe the right to privacy.
Jamaica already has a database of roughly 350,000 recorded fingerprints of convicts, which will be computerised under the Automatic Fingerprint Information System (AFIS).
But groups like the International Jamaica Council for Human Rights (IJCHR) and Jamaicans For Justice (JFJ) are concerned that the police may bully citizens into offering their fingers for checking against the computerised database. They say the proposed method of checking criminal history could open the door to even greater abuse of citizens' rights.
JFJ executive director Dr Carolyn Gomes sees a danger in the proposed method of requesting fingerprint checks, saying it amounts to an invasion of personal privacy.
Gomes argues if the police have reasonable suspicion their target is a criminal, the individual should be taken into custody and not harassed into complying with a request to place the index finger on the screen.

Finger Print System
The only persons to fear this system are the criminals. Jamaica is overrun by crime and all attempts must be made to solve them. Finger printing must be mandatory for all deportees coming back to jamaica who have a criminal record abroad. Finger printing is not optional when visiting the US, why then is there so much resistance if Jamaica requires the same from those entering or living in Jamaica?

Talk and communicate
What happen, let us talk we can only solve our problems by talking about it. God made man to talk, we are the only animal that can communicate in this way, so lets do it.

Free Jahcure Response
Would it be possible to give some details on how the crime was said to take place, is there any clothing that he was wearing at the time still avaiable, was he friend of the person who acused him, was the person an enemy, were they together at the same location. It is difficult to figure out this without proper information. DNA test can be done many years after, if the evidence was preserved . One of his song says "If he could be a better Man" , he seems to be a Man crying out for justice and maybe he was not able to explain himself during his trial. I am begining to belive that this Man is innocent, something is not right here!

Free Jahcure Response
Can you elaborate more on this case for me. DNA or better known as (De-oxy Ribose Nucleic Acid) is a very complex test. They should have been able to do that test in Jamaica, assuming that this is the country where this Crime took place. This would also indicate that if he was asking for this test, he may not have done this Crime.

This is needed. Let it be done
Look at the situation with Jah Cure. If there were more forensics, he would have been clear. He begged for DNA testing and fingerprinting to clear him because he knew he did not do it. But they said they did not take none. The corrupt system in Jamaica are less likely to convict innocent people with this new fingerprint system, they will be forced to process crime scenes better now and let the real criminals go to jail, not the innocent like Jah Cure. Too many innocent men in JA in jail. Big up to the new technology.

USE IT WISELY!!!!!
Accountability is always good especially for criminals;but finger printing should be limited to an extent. I don't know if anyone of you ever been in situations (like a simple fight) where you had was to defend yourself and then got arrested and finger printed. Then later on when you find a good job; your past comes back to haunt you. They are not looking at the simplicity of your arrest just the fact that you are in the system. I've seen it happens alot of times.

Finger Print Data Base
The finger print data base might seems a bit intrucive but can work to an advantage, if you dont have anything to hide, then there is no need to worry. It should be totally voluntary. When I am trvelling to the States, I was asked to give mines on a voluntary basis and I did, the next time I went through without any harrasment from Immigration. About the police getting prints by fource is another situation that should be address. Smart policemen knows that overuse of power is not good for any society. Your country cannot grow like that.

Timing is everything
Jamaicans I can understand are uncomfortable about the idea of having a system established in which finger prints are used to assist the police and other authorities to assist them in trying to resolve criminal and other related issues but we need to know that this process will not only assist people in authority but will give us civilians a great peace of mind. The justice system needs help. The crime rate in Jamaica is more than alarming. We are losing our young people at a very alarming rate; not only in Jamaica but also abroad. I am a proud Jamaican but it is very disturbing to know that our youth have no future. They are lost and if implementing a fingerprint system can assist us to be more productive in fighting crimes; we just have to work with it. Think about the best is yet to come. Don't consider it as a negativity.

Accountability
In cases where in fact its the Police themselves are the ones committing these horrendous crimes, instead of innocent folks, I say bring it on. Accountability is needed for the country, and if this is the first dtep then I say bring it on. There are many innocent people in prison right now because of lack of evidence to help with their defense, and mnay guilty ones roaming about, committing new crimes. Jamaica needs help in curbing this crime wave.

The Law wants some fingers Gulity or Not
Looking at the crime rate in Jamaica right now i would think this would be a device bring many of the idividuals commiting theses crimes closer to justice........... BUT i can see where the resitance is coming form knowing how many people in Jamaica are suffers of police brutality this device might be just another exucse to hurt the innocent.
