Unemployment has fallen to its lowest ever in Barbados. A household labour force survey from the island's Ministry of Economic Affairs indicated that for the third quarter of the year, that's July to September, the unemployment figure stood at 8.5 per cent.
The previous lowest figure was 9.9 per cent, recorded for a similar third-quarter period last year.
Government spokesman Senator Tyrone Barker said there had been an upsurge in economic activity and an increase in the employment of women.
Barker, credits the general services industry for sapping up most of the female employment.
At the end of September, 134 700 people were employed, 1 100 more for the corresponding quarter last year.
