Members of the Antigua's opposition in the Lower House staged a mutiny. In a swift and decisive move, three of them signed a document declaring they no longer have confidence in Robin Yearwood as their leader.
Replacing him is attorney-at-law Steadroy Cutie Benjamin. With the governor-generals assent, Benjamin was supposed to be sworn in as the new opposition leader as early as Monday.
The sudden action came only days after Yearwood sanctioned the appointment of Lennox Weston and Arthur Nibbs to the Senate.
Benjamin, whose signature is also attached to the document, said hes willing to take up the mantle of leadership.
Yearwood in the meantime maintains that none of his colleagues had communicated anything to him. He said he received the information indirectly.
The parliamentarians indicated they believe that Benjamin will offer decisive and proactive leadership in strengthening the performance of the opposition Antigua Labour Party.
