Cayman Island's Chief Immigration Officer Franz Manderson has announced a two-week extension on the amnesty concerning certain immigration offences. That moves the deadline by which illegal aliens had to leave the Islands from December 23 to January 6 of next year.
Mr Manderson said many people overstayed their time on the island for economic reasons.
Up to late last week, 39 people who had overstayed their time on the Cayman Islands, including 22 Jamaicans, took the amnesty and left the Island.
Manderson said the amnesty was under constant review and did not rule out the possibility of an extension.
Under the amnesty, which became effective on December 9, the Department of Immigration has promised not to prosecute persons for certain immigration offences.
It includes, those residing illegally in the Cayman Islands.
