Fifteen Cubans who fled their homeland and landed on an abandoned bridge in the Florida Keys were returned to Cuba after US officials concluded the piling did not constitute dry land.
Under the US government's "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy, Cubans who reach dry land in the United States are usually allowed to remain in the country, while those caught at sea are sent back.
Officials said the Cubans were aboard a US Coast Guard cutter, as they awaited a final decision as to their status.
The historic Old Seven Mile Bridge, which runs side by side with a newer bridge, is missing several chunks, and the Cubans had the misfortune of reaching pilings from a section that no longer touches land. The federal government said that means the group never actually reached US territory and could be sent home.
An attorney representing relatives of the Cubans had planned to file an emergency request to prevent them from being sent back when he learned they were repatriated. William Sanchez was going to ask the government to review the question of whether the bridge constitutes dry land.
Sanchez said later Monday he would file a lawsuit to seek their return to the US
The group included a 2-year-old and a 13-year-old boy.

Thanks for your correction, "Your Majesty King Of New York".Even if part of the Bridge was missing it should be assumed that it is related to Land. I wont take up your time. Cuban Refugee
I have to agree with you ,since 9/11 America has gone crasey, 9/11 was not just an attack on America. It was an attack on the world ,it was also a very terrible thing to do. That morning I was doing my Patient care when I saw it unfold on TV, at first I taught it was some communication error why the Aircrfts were flying in the buildings. Everybody lost some one in that disaster. I had a friend that was living in the states without proper documents. He was working at "The World Trade Center" and I have not heard from him since. Sending home these immigrants would be inhumane and callous, they should be allowed to stay.

double speak
The U.S are engaged in a double speak policy towards immigrants especially since 9/11. As far as I know these individuals were already within the 12 mile contigual zone, which is U.S teritorial waters. If they were caught running drugs or guns they would have been given their due in the courts of law. However, these individuals were seeking to better their present situation, which goes against the grain of American double speak policy.

I wish I could help you. I would also like to know where this Bridge is connected to myself. I have been to America many times and I have been treated very good, but some of their Laws needs to be re-visited, they are not applicable in todays world. The example about the Bridge not been Land is a prime example. America do better than that, more people love and respect your country than you know. Be more humane. The world is watching you. No Man is an Island (COUNTRY) and no Man stands alone. Peace!!!!

Haitian & Bridge
What I like about my American friends is this. They are very good Engineers to make a Bridge that is not connected to Land. This Bridge must be suspended on a Wire attached to a Satellite in outerpace. This article makes me laugh.
