Copyright experts in Jamaica say street sales of pirated music and movies have doubled since mid-2004. This is despite threats of sanctions from the United States. Bbootlegging has repotedly become so ingrained, even teens are selling to their friends at school to supplement their allowances.
Music piracy, from anecdotal evidence, pulls in tens of thousands weekly for street sellers, from both cassettes and compact disk recordings. It easily undercuts sales in music stores at less than a quarter of the price.
Some store owners in the Kingston area reported an drop in sales of about 20 to 35 percent due to pricay. Dancehall music in particular has been affected..
Disks of the hottest music and artistes that normally retail for $950 to $1,500 Jamaican dollars on average, are sold openly on the streets for $300 to $400. It's even cheaper on school campuses, at $150 to $200..
Under the Copyright Act, offenders are to be fined up to $100,000 per count for pirated material. But in the majority of cases the judges only give out fines between $5,000 and $15,000. Persons then go back out on the street and continue selling.

HARD PUN BOTH PARTIES
I dislike the idea of copying anything and not profiting the artist for their work completely. But in this case it make sense why man a copy and sell. You see JA crime rate like many other West Indies countries its very high if not the highest, so I dont blame anyone for copying whatever. If they are selling CDS and DVD on da street they are not holdin a gun, committing a murder case or selling drugs, because them need a way to survive in da city. Its a hard decision to make for the legal system everywhere, not just JA; however, can do something for da people in term of production of jobs opportunities if them want to solve da problems and I mean Mr. Politican not just that one of coping stuff but crimes and death too. GIVE US DA PEOPLE JOBS.

i agree with you tweta the last comment at the bottom. this true, the usa have more bootlegging going on than anyother country in the world after all is dem everyone else get it from. usa need to mind their own frigging business and give everyone else a chance to make it in life. when you want a cd sometimes you don't even like half of the songs on an album so why spend us 19.95 or 16.00 for bull shit when you only want to hear one or two. everyone is trying to make money this is how the world is , leave jamaica alone and fix your own problem, you not the best country in the world because china soon mach up the whole uno blouse naut, they are well smarter and wiser. give ghetto youth a chance man mi tired fi see them get fight thats why so much a them turn out to be war head and lord. since us want to band piracy, come and build up some stores and give the poor a job and stop been a bully. Dont be fooled by a few used Cars that a country can offer at a discount rate, look at the countries track record. China is very bad with "Human Rights". Chris I dont think China makes cars but I stand corrected on this.Did you mean Japan? Anyway Jamaican deserve more than peoples old beat out used cars, dont you think!

The Misconception !!!!!
My only suggestion is that this world have to realised the concepts of Econ such as Economies of Scale.
We Used to have to wait on Up North to produce Cars, the chinese come with deportee cars and "nuff man" can now own cars in ja.
Soon from this the chinese ago formulate ways of developing movies whey look like Hollywood and LA will die.
Americans must realise the world is now nearer and they cannot restrict what we get or do not get.
They Americans are losing HOLD on the world and what they have will be made available at less cost.

Decent Argument!!!!!!
There is a set of artiste know as twins of twins in ja.When dem buss,is because a little man tek the cassette of some popular animated voice done by these artiste.Nuff a dem guys in Ja would not make it if pirate never start show them up.Producers, managers and studios fling(throw away ) what them do & call it crap.
Pirates(CColumbus) show ja to spain.
So who is us to discard them.Pirates have a purpose and can be a marketing tools.
Bless

Cut Your Price & Sell In Volume
CD's are expencive everywhere you go, in Canada some popular songs can cost $27.00Ca. =$1498.50Ja. The Pirate copy cost $5.00Ca.=$277.50 Ja. The quality might not be the same; I must admit, in terms of "Acoustics", some instruments cant be heard properly but who cares, we are still hearing what we want to hear at a lower cost. Make your price cheaper and we will buy the real McCoy. This is very unfair to the Artist and we all know that but who dont want to save a buck when they can?

Cut the Cost
In a competitive World, here is a simple econ lesson.
When Demand increase, supply decrease and price goes up.
The producer should aim to cut cost, increase efficency and try to maxmise profits.
Copy the method use by the pirates so you can produce at the rate and reduce cost of the pirates.
Flood the market and only the fittest of the fit will survive.
Stop charge pain in the ass fee when only one song pon the whole album good.
People will always continue regardless of law if it gives a sense of survival and opportunity and thats why no matter what ,people will involve into illegal things.
