The Barbados Workers' Union (BWU) says it will seek A SHORTER WORK WEEK for sugar industry workers during the next round of negotiations with the industry's principals next year.
The union's deputy general secretary, Robert "Bobby" Morris, said the BWU wanted the hours dropped from 56 to 40.
The three-year contract between the two sides had just entered the third year, Morris said.
He added that traditionally, during the crop sugar workers had a 12-hour day, seven days a week, amounting to 84 hours. His union brought that down to 56 now they want to move to 40.
