After a 40 percent increase in troops, the United Nations, while facing a deteriorating security situation, believes peacekeepers have made an encouraging start. Currently, there are two thousand seven hundred peacekeepers in Haiti, and the United Nation hopes to double that figure within the next few months. The U.N would like to see 3 times the number of peacekeepers secure the region, and replace the three thousand U.S led multinational force, now occupying the area. The United Nations is attempting to rally a total six thousand seven hundred UN peacekeepers in order to ease tensions after the February 29th ousting of former president Jean-Bertrand-Aristide.
