More than 20 people have been confirmed killed over the past week and some 2,000 UN peacekeepers forced to rush back into the island's capital to try to restore peace.
The violence has injured a half-dozen in the United Nations contingent, some of whom had to be hospitalized for gun battle wounds. UN officials seem to believe that someone is on a mission to discredit Prevals name. Preval however refuses to say the new violence is aimed at his leadership, but blames the unrest on drug gangs. Meanwhile, thousands of Haitians demonstrated for the return of ousted President Jean Bertrand Aristide from exile in South Africa. Armed only with t shirts bearing Aristide's image, the crowd gathered in the capital's poorest district before moving through other parts of the city, dispersing finally in front of the presidential palace.
