News from Kourou in French Guyana, which was the site of a recent rocket launch which contained Japanese and French Communication satellites. According to reports, the Ariane-5 rocket blasted off from the space base in Kourou and minutes later released into orbit two communication satellites. The first satellite was a JCSAT-10 satellite owned by Japans JSAT Corporation designed to broadcast high definition television to the Asia-Pacific region. The rocket subsequently released Syracuse 3B, a military communications satellite for France's Defense Ministry. Similar to the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the West Indies, French Guiana, situated on the northeast coast of the South American continent, adjacent to Suriname, is an overseas department of France.
