Former New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik has been contracted by Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo to work along with Guyanese government to reform the police force. Kerik, who was US President George Bush's nominee to serve as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, also served as Police Commissioner in NYC during the the September 11 terrorist attacks. The experienced cop also served in the U.S. Army and the DEA. Kerik's firm is being contracted under the US$20M plan being funded by a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank. Jagdeo reveled that under the proposed reform there would be special units to deal with certain types of criminality. Meanwhile, Guyanse presidential candidate Manzoor Nadir has called on national leaders to consider the option of enforcing the death penalty once individuals have been found guilty of armed attacks. Commenting on the recent slaughter of the pressmen at Kaieteur News Nadir said that the murders were a direct attack on press freedom in Guyana and appealed to all stakeholders to condemn the killings and any incidents that would prevent the media from executing their professional responsibilities.
