Following the Trinidadian governments recent decision to employ British cops to its national Police force, financial reports have shown that British "detective constables", brought into the local law enforcement system, are paid an annual basic salary that is roughly eight times more than the annual basic salary of local police constables and even more than Police Commissioner Trevor Paul. Figures reveal that the annual basic earnings for "detective constables and detective chief superintendents", who were hired by the Trinidadian Government, ranged from TT$493,000 to TT$1.2 million, whilst local law enforcers were paid a basic salary of TT$60,000 According to National Security Minister Martin Joseph, remuneration for the British officers did not include allowances or expenditure in support of spouses or dependants, and their contracts were renewable for an extension of one year, after the officers had completed their two years of service.Five months ago, Joseph had said that while the officers were working in Trinidad and Tobago, they would be paid salaries that they had obtained in the UK matched by Government and that they would be paid in pounds sterling. The figures show that the officers remuneration in Trinidad is actually higher than what they would have earned as Constables back in the UK.
