A recent riot by Prisoners at the Golden Grove state Prison in Arouca east Trinidad has promptd the The Prisons Association in Trinidad to launch a plea for the authorities to deal with outstanding issues affecting Police officers in the Twin Republic. Officials believe that the authorities inability to deal such as contribute to the growing disorder at the nation's prisons.
According to the Prison Association's Public Relations Officer, Rajkumar Ramroop, rioting broke out amongst inmates at the Golden Grove whilst officers were carrying out a routine procedure of searching cells for illegal items. The inmates reportedly became aggravated by the exercise and in revolt, started to break the lighting fixtures in their cell blocks by using discarded newspaper, which eventfully caught fire. The prisoners then threatened to burn down the facility. Although calm has been restored among inmates, The Association has insisted that the National Security Minister Martin Joseph address their concerns regarding prison officer safety as a matter of priority.
