Hugo Chavezs government has pledged to Guyana that, should Venezuela win occupancy of the vacant Temporary Seat on the United Nations Security Council, it will not use the opportunity to advance its border dispute with Guyana. Relations between Guyana and Venezuela have been marked by sporadic disputes over Guyanas western boundary with Venezuela at the mouth of the Orinoco River, a quarrel left unresolved since the 19th century. In 1990, however, the Guyana Defence Force and the Venezuelan Army signed a protocol establishing the framework for improved relations, which have seen an improvement in relations over the years. Now, with Argentina vacating its seat on the UN Security Council in 2007, the US Administration has been pressuring the Caribbean Community to support Guatemala and not Venezuela for the temporary seat. Despite this pressure from the US, Guyana, in a sterling gesture of Caribbean solidarity, opted instead to join its Caricom brothers in supporting Venezuela for occupancy of the Temporary Seat in the UN Security Council.
