Jamaica has joined the ranks of developing countries that have called on their youth to engage in entrepreneurial activities to boost employment levels in their country. Minister of Labour and Social Security, Derrick Kellier recently stated that the Jamaican government was committed to employment creation through small business development and would fully support initiatives aimed at promoting entrepreneurship.
.. The combined effort of the government and the private sector is required to meet these objectives. The Minister said, as he addressed the third annual Evening of Excellence of the Jamaica Employers Federation (JEF). He said that the governments tangible support for small business development was reflected in the recent JA $1 billion investment in small and medium enterprises as part of the long-term investment approach of the National Industrial Policy. Meanwhile, JEF President, Audrey Hinchcliffe, implored civil servants and private sector workers alike to shun inferior service and mediocrity. She urged employees to exceed the expected performance levels and strive for excellence as a strategy for beating out the competition in the global working environment.
