In Monsterrat concerns over volcanic activity in that Caribbean island have been temporarily abated. Following a recent assessment of the Soufriere Hills Volcano, Sue Loughlin, Director of the Montserrrat Volcano Observatory, has announced a drop in the volcano alert from level four to level three. According to the Observatory Director, a drop in volcanic activity in the Belham Valley prompted the lowering of the alert. Following the assessment officials granted permission for mining operators to resume their activities in the Belham Valley which had restricted during the period of heightened activity. Despite the temporary calm, Government House officials maintain that the restrictions on activities in Plymouth would remain in force pending completion of a Damage Assessment report and a review of the latest Scientific Advisory Committee Report. It was also agreed that St. Georges Hill would remain closed, pending further assessment, given its close proximity to a new vent in the Gages Wall which until recently had vigorously spouting ash in the direction of the islands capital city Plymouth
