Immigration authorities from Guyana and Barbados have vowed to work together and share information to resolve passport and other immigration issues. This comes after statements from Barbadian Chief Immigration officer Gilbert Greaves that the Guyanese authorities should be held accountable for loopholes in the passport issuance system. The Bajan official appealed to the Guyanese Immigration to pay closer scrutiny to the distribution of new passports to Guyanese nationals. In a follow up to this appeal, The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has issued a statement saying there was no evidence that false travel documents were getting past the immigration department. However, Senior Superintendent George Vyphuis, Guyanas Deputy Chief Immigration Officer has confirmed that Guyana will be stepping up its security measures and that the Immigration authorities from Barbados and Guyana would be sharing information so as to establish the origin of several false passports that have passed through the system.
We have established contact with each other to deal with this issue for the [sake] of both countries and we have decided to work together to get these matters sorted," Vyphuis said. The two have also decided to work to ensure that citizens were treated properly by immigration personnel from both countries, particularly in Barbados.
