The Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) has issued a call to action for a delegation of Caribbean tourism Industry Officials and Caribbean heads to go to Washington to address the impact of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative on the Caribbean region. The CHA is very concerned by the exclusion of air travel in the June 2009 extension of the passport requirements stipulated in the Initiative. According to the findings of study commissioned by the CHA, the Caribbean could stand to lose US$2.6 billion, with close to 188,300 people left jobless, when the initiatives 2007 air travel deadline comes into effect. The Washington DC-based Caribbean / Central American Action and the World Travel and Tourism Council have committed their support to Caribbean Hotel Association and the Caribbean Tourism Organization in this mission which is of grave importance to the regions economic survival.
