In the Bahamas, government officials have finally broken their silence on an alleged fist fight which took place some 3 weeks ago in cabinet Office between Minister of Parliament Koed Smith and his colleague Kenyatta Gibson. With few facts on the issue, there was wide speculation as to possible repercussions and calls for resignation. In a much anticipated press conference, Prime Minister Christie announced that he had accepted the resignation of the two Parliamentarians, but denied that he had asked them to resign. The Prime Minister told reporters that Smith had resigned from his positions as chairman of the Bahamas Environment Science and Technology Commission and Ambassador for the Environment since October 3. He said Gibson handed in his resignation as chairman of the Bahamas Gaming Board on October 5 with effect from October 9. The Leader of the Opposition severely criticised the Bahamian government for conspiring to cover up the details of the dispute. The PM admitted that during the altercation $800 damage was done to a glass window and table.
