After months of speculation the date has finally been announced. Voters in St Lucia will go to the polls to elect a new government on Monday December 11, 2006.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Kenny Anthony, who also revealed
November 30 as nomination day for candidates. The election will be a straight fight between Dr Anthony's governing St Lucia Labour Party and the opposition United Workers Party of former Prime Minister Sir John Compton. According to electoral officials, there are 135,958 registered voters this year, a major increase over the electoral roll of 2001, when the last election was held. It remains to be seen whether the Labour Party will meet its goal of a third straight term in Government, where it currently holds 13 f the 17 parliamentary seats. The UWP however has been urging St Lucians to vote out the government which it claims has mismanaged the economy and turned a blind eye to increasing levels of crime on the Eastern Caribbean Island.
