Ecuador has refused to back down in its bid to have duties removed from Latin American bananas being imported by the European Union. Ecuador has challenged the EU regime that allows bananas from the European Unions former colonies to enter the market duty free, while charging a 225 dollar a ton tariff on Latin American bananas. Earmon Courtenay Belize's Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister and current chairman of Caricom's Council for Trade and Economic Development says the European Union should not give in to the bullying tactics of Ecuador which already enjoys a status as the worlds biggest banana exporter. Official trade figures show that 3.4 million of the 4 million tons of bananas consumed by the EU, come from Latin America.
