The government of Guyana is celebrating its achievement in raising the standard of living for its ordinary citizens. In a Human Development report titled Beyond Scarcity: Power Poverty and the Global Water Crisis issued by the United Nations, it was noted that Guyana had moved up four notches in its human development capacity, and successfully carried out a number of interventions aimed at improving the lives of its countrymen. Guyana was specially commended for its initiative in ensuring that potable water was available for all its citizens. Over the past 13 years, Guyana has been channeling significant amounts of resources towards the achievement of this goal. This year the water sector was allocated $1.5 billion in the national budget, with $240M of that sum allocated for service connections, construction of ground storage tanks and development of new networking systems, amongst other developmental projects.
