Authorized producers of canned ackees are alleging that unscrupulous producers imitate labels and place them on their own product for export and local use. Ira Ashman of Ashman Food Products described the situation as organized illegal activity. Recently the local Bureau of Standards warned the public of untested canned ackees under the label Pot of Gold.
The pirated ackee carries labels that read manufactured by West Best Foods and labeled by Agriventures Ltd. However, the manufacturing code and the labelling code displayed on the cans differ from that owned by both companies and they deny being associated with the product. The lucrative North American market is the main motive for the piracy and consumers are asked to be on the look-out.
