UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was one of many voices the world over calling for the US prison in Guantanamo Cuba to be shut down. Demonstrators in Cuba took to the streets in mock prison garb whilst in London, Washington, Madrid and Moscow similar protests were held. Officials from the Human Rights group Amnesty International staged a protest right outside the gates of the Prison in Guantanamo and presented a mock life at Guantanamo reenactment dressed as detainees and prison guards. where prisoners are being held. Around 395 people are being held at the controversial US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, most of them denied legal rights such as access to courts or legal counsel. The US government established the Guantanamo facility in the months after the September 11 attacks to interrogate suspects rounded up in countries such as Afghanistan as part of the US war on terror. In all, nearly 800 prisoners have passed through the camp since January 2002 when it first opened its cells to inmates.
